If you're watching your weight, you probably know that portion control is the key to dieting without depriving yourself. But it's not always easy to count calories when your snack doesn't come with a suggested serving size. Enter Calorific, a new iOS app designed to help you visualize what 200 calories of food actually look like.

The app's high-quality photography and pastel backgrounds serve to minimize the pain that comes with finding out that 200 calories of donuts is actually less than one whole donut. You can download it for free on the iPhone and iPad, but you'll have to shell out $2.99 if you want access to the entire library of 144 foods.

And since Calorific was created by a British company, a few foods such as crumpets or Battenberg cake may not be very relevant to you. But have no fear, your favorite snacks are still in there — Doritos, anyone?

The app takes portion visualization to the next level with the food comparison tool, which helps you snack smarter by showing how 200 calories of one snack stacks up against another. Here are a couple that might surprise you.
