The father of one of my daughter's school basketball teammates shouts abusively from the stands if the girls are losing. Can I say anything to him?

It depends on how well you know him.

P.S. If you're friendly with this parent (and he's an otherwise rational guy), try pulling him aside at halftime to talk. In a nonjudgmental way, say, "Jim, I know it's easy to get worked up over some of the plays, but the kids can hear you. Can you try to tone it down? Thanks!" However, if you don't know this parent well, the safest approach is to talk to the girls' coach. It's up to the people in charge to keep spectators under control.
