Two fabulous things combine to create this dynamic, show-stopping snack: Cake and candy. And luckily, you won't need a bat and blindfold to reveal what's on the inside — a knife or a wooden spoon will do the trick. Here's how to make the cake that keeps on giving:

1. Choose your pan.
For a different take on cake, we like the Lekue Surprise Cake Kit (above, $35), which creates a hollow, all-chocolate confection with only three ingredients: Dark chocolate, white chocolate, and food coloring. The silicon pans can bake up a traditional cake as well, and are incredibly easy to clean.

For a traditional cake-y cake, try the Nordicware Piñata Cake Pan ($22). You'll actually need to make two cakes to pull this dessert together, so buy an extra pan for speedier baking.

2. Pick a candy surprise.
Follow your pan's instructions to make your cake, and while it cools, choose your secret, hidden ingredients. I decided on Skittles, but M&M's, Sweet Tarts, or berries would also work well. (Having a baby? Choose pink or blue candies to reveal your little one's gender in a super fun way.) Place the candy in the hollowed center of the cake, and frost to your liking. Once it's time to cut the cake, your guests won't know what hit them — or their sweet tooth!
