Thanksgiving is a particular kind of American tradition. It's a day for enjoying the company of loved ones, and reflecting all of our blessings — followed by running to stores for a pre-Black Friday frenzy. In recent years, as Black Friday sales have creeped earlier and earlier stores have opened on Thanksgiving — a practice has been met with protest. After all, who wants to work on Thanksgiving?

Some retailers have decided that is enough is enough — they won't open on the holiday. This year, REI is the most recent store to join the list of retailers that will be closed, and they're taking it one step further: Closing on Black Friday (and paying their employees for the time off).

"Our definition of success goes beyond money," REI chief executive Jerry Stritzke said in a company statement. "We think that Black Friday has gotten out of hand and so we are choosing to invest in helping people get outside with loved ones this holiday season, over spending it in the aisles."

The growing list of companies that have announced they will be closed on Thanksgiving includes popular retailers like Costco, T.J. Maxx, and Staples.

"We want our customers and associates to enjoy Thanksgiving their own way," Staples North American President Demos Parneros said in a company statement.

As of now, these are the stores that have announced they will be closed for Thanksgiving Day:

• REI

• Costco

• Sam's Club

• Burlington Stores

• T.J. Maxx

• Marshalls

• Home Goods

• Pier 1 Imports

• Dillards

• DSW

• Nordstrom

• Crate & Barrel

• Barnes & Noble

• Home Depot

• Lowe's

• BJ's

• GameStop

• Petco

• Petsmart

• Half Price Books

• Mattress Firm

• P.C. Richard & Son

• Staples

• Von Maur

• At Home

• American Girl Store

• Patagonia

• H&M

These stores will remain open online and, with the exception of REI, reopen for Black Friday deals.

Last year, stores like Nordstrom, DSW, and Barnes & Noble decided to stay closed Thanksgiving too, but they haven't declared plans for this year yet. We'll be updating the list of stores here as more retailers announce their decision.
