preview for Hack or Whack: Can You Really Peel Apple Using a Power Drill?

It's not every day we get to pretend to be Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor right in our test kitchens, but when we heard that you could peel an apple in record time using an electric drill, we were practically racing to Home Depot to test it out.

The premise is simple: Twist a drill bit right through the core of the apple, hold your peeler up to the apple, and slowly power up the drill, increasing the power as you go (without ever going full blast—unless you want to risk an apple flying off at you).

The results, though, were mixed: It does peel the apple in record time, but (1) you're going to have a wonderful time cleaning far-flung apple bits off your counters, walls, face and ceiling; and (2) does sticking a drill bit—no matter how clean—through your apples make them less appetizing? Our team was torn.

However, when you're staring down dozens of apples that need to be peeled for your mile-high apple pie, you may want to take your cooking to the great outdoors and get drilling (because flinging apple peels in your backyard isn't making a mess; it's fertilizing, right?).
